UPDATED March 13, 2:30 p.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for our county. Snow is expected to begin tonight and may continue through Tuesday morning. There is still some uncertainty as to expected accumulations – you can check the National Weather Service website.

Watch 2:15 p.m. update from our Office of Emergency Management:

This is the first significant snowstorm this winter. Here are 8 things to know so you and your family are prepared:

2. VDOT Snow Removal

The Virginia Department of Transportation is responsible for snow removal on most county roads. VDOT is aggressively pre-treating roads throughout our area in advance of tonight’s forecasted snow. You can visit http://www.vdotplows.org/ to see the status of plowing in your neighborhood.

3. Hypothermia Prevention

If you see an unsheltered person who may be at risk of hypothermia, call the police non-emergency phone line at 703-691-2131, TTY 711.

4. Safety Tips

We have had a long stretch without snow, watch this for important safety tips and good reminders:

5. Check on Neighbors

Please check in on elderly or other housebound people you may know to make sure they have supplies.

6. Don’t Forget Pets

Don’t forget your pets — as conditions deteriorate, bring pets/companion animals inside; move other animals to sheltered areas with non-frozen drinking water.

7. Clear Fire Hydrants

Depending on how much snow we get, there may be a need to dig out fire hydrants. Please note their location near your home. If you’re able and if we get enough snow, please help dig out fire hydrants when the snow ends.  We also need more of you to sign up for the Adopt-A-Hydrant program!

8. Fill Your Gas Tank

If you have a car, fill your gas tank before the snow begins falling. Make sure your car has essential emergency supplies.
