As we continue to dig out from the blizzard that dumped about 30 inches of snow on some parts of our county, there’s still work to finish. Here’s a guide to get us through the next few days:
As we slowly return to normal, patience is needed. Be patient driving. Be patient walking. We’ll get through this just fine if we’re collectively patient!
If you do not have one passable lane now, contact the Virginia Department of Transportation at 1-800-FOR-ROAD or novainfo@vdot.virginia.gov. If you’re still not sure who maintains your road, check out this map and enter your address.
Drivers: do NOT park on snow emergency routes.
Drivers and pedestrians: please use EXTREME caution as there are tall snow banks, unshoveled sidewalks and other hazards created by this massive storm.
While not legally obligated, residents and businesses are asked to help keep sidewalks safe.
We need sidewalks cleared, especially near schools. Children need to get back in the classroom, so your help is needed. Form a neighborhood brigade. Lend a hand to clear all sidewalks.
Here are some things to consider:
- What areas are priority for clearing to keep your neighborhood and residents safe? If you live in an apartment complex, how can you help?
- Who will shovel out fire hydrants so our Fire and Rescue Department has easy access?
- Can you volunteer to use/share equipment such as small snow blowers for a community removal effort.
- Shovel snow into the yard instead of into the street to minimize the problem of a plow covering your driveway with snow after you’ve just shoveled it.
- Do some neighbors need assistance in clearing their walkways (due to age, health conditions, disability, etc.)?
- If neighbors are on vacation (lucky them!), can someone chip in and clear their snow?
- Keep the openings of storm drains clear of snow and debris to help alleviate potential flooding.
- Make sure that all parking spots identified as accessible parking spaces for people with disabilities are cleared of snow.
